Flammable gases such as acetylene, methane, propane, carbon monoxide or oxy-hydrogene ignite explosively. In oxyacetylene welding technology the use of dry seals made of sintered metal have entirely replaced the older, hydraulic seals, which should prevent a flashback into the gas generator. These explosion fuses made from porous sintered metals have the advantage, that they – at a sufficient flow rate – offer a high flow resistance to the explosions pressure. Additionally, due to their good thermal conductivity, they absorb as much heat energy from the incoming detonation wave so that the flashing back of the flame into the gas reser-voir is avoided. In addition comes their high mechanical strength.
A sintered tube made from stainless steel (AISI 316 L) is designated as flame arrester. Flame arrestor is integrated in safety fittings in order to provide security at gas outlets, distribution lines and single gas cylinders in gas welding technology. A flame arrester stops a flashback coming from the gas outlet side and, due to its good thermal conductivity, cools it down below ignition temperature, so that the gas on the inlet side cannot be ignited.
Flame arresters are manufactured according to the customer specified flow values. This is more complex than manufacturing by density, since initially various samples of different densities have to be pressed and sintered. For the serial production, these samples have to be analyzed with respect to their flow rate, and the required densities be defined according to the measured values.
Tridelta Siperm GmbH manufactures flame arresters in various different pore sizes according to customer specified flow rates. Basically, our qualities SIPERM® R 1 – SIPERM® R 200 are available for this purpose.
